Brick Backsplash for Cottage Kitchen - Step One Completed!
The bricks are in! I almost waited until tomorrow to take more photos after the stove was moved back into place, but I'm so excited, hehe, that I had to share. Step one of the backsplash project is complete! Click for a larger photo...Just ignore the stove in the middle of the kitchen! By Friday I hope to grout and then next week, I can paint the bricks. I'll be painting them a bisque color - about the same color as the sink and other appliances. The actual color is called "Honey Milk". After painting them, I'm going to take a stiff wire brush or heavy sandpaper and distress the paint a bit as I want to try to retain the "old brick" look. I haven't decided yet if I will use glaze or not - we'll see. Hubs really likes the brick and says it turned out better than he expected. He also said he wouldn't mind not painting the bricks, but I think they would compete with the red cabinets if left unpainted, plus they are rather dark.
Today was such a long day and am I zapped! Thank you for all of your comments below. I appreciate hearing from all of you and will respond intelligently when my brain cells have had time to repair, lol!

Before I retire for the night, I must share with you a little gem I found on the clearance table at the bookstore. Apparently this title, The Country Diary of an Edwardian Lady was also a movie and if it's half as charming as the book, I'd love to see it! The book is an actual nature diary written in 1906 by a woman named Edith Holden. The diary is written in her handwriting and is also filled to the brim with her beautiful watercolors. Each page is just so sweet:)
"Written in 1906, as a record of the stunning natural world around her, Edith Holden’s diary captures the innocence of the Edwardian age. In her own hand and accompanied with her beautiful and delicately observed watercolours, this book revels in the passing of the seasons..."
"For 70 years, her enchanting journal lay undiscovered--until 1977, when it was first published with great success (as any bookseller will recall). Now, it is back in print, ours to treasure once again. All the charm and beauty of the original remains intact in this facsimile, with Holden's carefully handwritten entries: favorite poems, personal thoughts, observations of the wildlife she saw in her native Warwickshire; and remarks on her travels throughout England and Scotland. On every page, her exquisitely rendered paintings--executed with a naturalist's eye for detail and an artist's sensitivity and skill--capture birds perched on branches, their mouths open in song; a tiny shrew mouse, sniffing the air; delicate butterflies and slithering snakes; fluttering leaves; and an array of flowers, from pink foxgloves and trailing roses to yellow water lilies. And, each spellbinding picture reflects her deep love of nature. Surely a beloved classic for a new generation of book buyers. ~Amazon editorial review"
It seems there are a couple of different versions of this book - one with "yellowed" paper, or at least paper made to look old and with different book covers. I'm not sure which is which is which, but I'm sure happy to have the copy I picked up today!

It looks great Kim! You know what I immediately thought of when I saw the brick backsplash? What if you did the brick above the cabinets as well...it would look like the kitchen was built into an entire brick wall...just an idea! You're progress is amazing! I really want to finish up on our projects...my stepson is coming home from college so hopefully he'll pitch in! Thanks for the work in progress shot - that's what I love about you!
Dawn
Your backsplash is looking lovely.
The "Country Diary" movie is pleasant but short and more of a biography than companion to the book. I viewed a copy from my library so you might find one in your library system.
Your blog was my first introduction to blogs and after clicking on some of your links it has become a daily habit and I now have my own! I love it! Thanks for a great experience. Where did you find the book on clearance? Maybe other branches would have it too?
Okay Kim, I want your kitchen!!!!!
The brick looks fantastic not to mention the cupboards, counter, sink and faucet. I had no idea the brick could look so good and it does.
The backsplash is looking great! I can't wait to see it when you've painted and distressed! I love your kitchen!
I appreciate and admire the work you are putting into your home!

Oh Kim! I love the bricks. You are getting there, girl! Everything is looking so nice. Great job!
Marilyn
Thanks, everyone! I wasn't sure how well they'd turn out, but now I can't stop staring at them, lol, even in their incomplete state! I think if my cabinets were white, I'd leave the bricks just as they are:)
Dawn, I thought of that, too! But, after thinking about it for quite a while, I decided that after we add our fairly wide crown moulding at the ceiling, you'll barely be able to see any brick we'd add above the cabinets. Plus, I think the transition for the crown moulding from the brick to the drywall in the rest of kitchen would be kind of awkward. But I did think about that even before the install yesterday - great minds!
Happy Housewife, that's great to know about the movie! I'll have to poke around our library to see if they have a copy - thanks!
Hi Kathleen! Thank *you* for dropping by often:) I found the book at Books-A-Million, but you can also find it online at Amazon or possibly Ebay. I *think* it's the older version first reproduced in 1977 that has the aged-looking paper, if you're interested. Hope you find a copy! I'm going to display mine open-faced on a book stand on my kitchen counter with the diary entries corresponding to the current day and month. I really love this book:)
Thank you, Patricia and Pat. So many things to finish in the kitchen, but it's slowly getting there!
Thank you, Marilyn! Slowly but surely!
Oh, and Dawn! I forgot to mention that we are going to be completely bricking this weird wall in the kitchen (or at least I *almost* have hubs convinced since he's please with how the backsplash turned out).
HI
Have been reading your blog for awhile. I do not have my own blog but am seriously considering it.
What color/company is the white you are using... Bisque?
we have recently purchased an older home and to save money are thinking of painting the 60's style cabinets.... I am looking for a nice soft white color to go with the already white appliances in the house?
Thanks again for your inspirational blog!
Mim

I love your kitchen it is lovely. I think you should paint and distress the bricks! That will look amazing! Thanks for all the inspiration.
Andrea
Love the bricks but they definitely need paint. Why don't men want you to paint anything? My husband's the same way.
Oh it's so nice to have a window over the sink. We rarely have that in Finland. We usually have the Finnish invention , a cupboard for drying the dishes over the sink. It's a Finnish invention. Nowadays they don't use it as much because most appartments have dish washers. Still, almost every new kitchen in Finland comes with this dryer cupboard.
Oh Kim, The brick backsplash looks great!
It really adds a "farmhouse kitchen" feel.
Can't wait to see the room when its all completed.
Kimberly:)
Kim, love the brick backsplash, agree with you that glazing/painting will look great! It's always fun to stop by & see the wonderful progress on your house.

I LOVE that book! I haven't purchased it but check it out from our library every once in a while. Didn't know there was a movie. BTW, the bricks look great.
Your brick backsplash is amazing! It really looks fantastic. I think I would paint them too. I'm so in love with those cabinets. Can't wait to see the whole room done!

Hey Kim ~ the brick looks nice. Certainly gives it an old world feel. =) There are a lot of old brick homes in the valley where we are at right now & one of them has white paint that has gracefully been worn through time. The house has vines going up the sides and and looks so picturesque! Seeing your brick backsplash makes me think of that little cottage. =)
Hi Kim! Thanks for visiting my blog! I am really enjoying coming to visit yours now. Daily! It's addicting. I'm inspired by what you're doing and I'm going to start posting more of the nitty-gritty of our renovations--we're in the same boat as you--trying to to create cottage charm with a tiny budget. I hope we can all collectively pull it off! BTW, you are totally right on painting the brick. Best!
Well guess what? There is a set of dishes that has the art from this book...made by Noritake. I got them as our wedding dishes. Country Diary by Noritake...there are also cross stich books of these designs.
Kim, could you please write the steps you took to do your cabinets. And the brands of paint. what is your antiquing technique. Your cubboards are amazing. Also, do you have a picture of the front of your home outside. I'd love to see one.
I liek the bricks as they are...brings out the color of tha cabinets and makes the counter really "fit" the cupboards...but then again I like vibrant colors.
I love the kitchen and the backsplash. Very curious to see the final product as we are will remodel our kitchen eventually and I love to gather all great ideas!!
Wow, the brick looks amazing! I can't wait to see the end result! I love the counters as well. Have you gotten used to them yet? I think everything is looking GREAT!
Your kitchen looks wonderful and I love that old dresser too!

Love the new backsplash -- can't wait to see it completed and antiqued into a creamy white!
Jan at Rosemary Cottage admiring your wonderful transformations at your home!
that looks amazing! I was thinking of using pavers for our front steps. Our house is brick and thought that would be too much red brick. Never thought about painting/distressing. Thanks for a great idea. Would love to know the steps when you have time. Can`t wait to see the picture when finished.
I'm lovin' your blog! Your cabinets are great and you're so clever with that brick backsplash. I'll be visiting here lots.
Oh, and Edith Holden is one of my nature journal mentors. I love to nature journal. I'm glad you found her.

Thanks for all the lovely comments about the backsplash and book! The backsplash is coming along...just today I got it 3/4 of the way grouted and ran out of grout! Grrrrr!! Another trip to Lowes tomorrow!
Hi, I'm clicking through blogland and found you! I love your brick backsplash...what a great idea.
..and my MIL gave me that sweet book a few years ago...I love it for inspiration.
Suzanne
your backsplash looks awesome!!!! I might have to do that too :)
love using brick in homes in non-traditional ways (well, non-traditional for a while now :)
we used brick pavers on two of our smaller bedrooms that are "offices" for us :) ...of course, I didn't think about the Whole Rolling Office Chair thing too much...oh well...it looks good & the brick really keeps those two rooms cooler than the rest of the house...a big plus in our area...
and those red cabinets! luv them...in our last home, I wanted distressed black cabinets installed but the company wanted to charge me an arm & a leg...
the conversation had lines like "You want to charge me $2500 to paint my cabinets black and then sandpaper them?"...a footnote to this is I had a very small kitchen in a Victorian home!
so I went a beautiful transparent olive green stain...
and now that we're here in our ranch-slash-cottage, I've been wanting to paint these cabinets so badly...the only hitch is the previous owners had a kitchen fire the year before they moved...and put in great brand-spanking new cabinets...and I'm scared to death I'll ruin them! if they were cruddy old cabinets, I'd work on them in a heartbeat...
But yours came out so loverly I may have to re-think this!
I have a tan/beige sort of colored brick backsplash in my kitchen. (you can see it on my blog, just search for brick backsplash, it should come up). It's funny, when we bought the house I was not that thrilled with it, but now it's in style. I still don't think I am that thrilled with it though, lol...but at least it's in style ;) Can't wait to see how your kitchen comes out, maybe it will inspire me to love my brick backsplash.
Nice to meet you!
