Day 28: Kitchen Cabinet Makeover Challenge + "Emergency" Bedroom Temporary Re-Do
In kitchen news, I put the last coat of red paint on all the drawers, plus four of the cabinet doors are ready to be installed! I have a few hinges sprayed a dark bronze color and they look much better than the previous brass finish and will match our new handles. I also finished putting the first coat of red on the rest of the doors. These doors are just going to take forever. I'm not trying to sound negative, but because of the humidity, I can't just flip them over to do the other side as soon as I would like. The drying and curing time seems to be doubling and tripling in this weather. Slow and steady, I suppose!
Little did we know this time last week that we'd be pulling up our daughters' bedroom carpet this weekend. After Tuesday's run to the doctor to find out that Lindsay had a really bad ear infection brought on by her allergies, hubs and I decided that it was time to get rid of her bedroom carpet. We had planned on doing this later, anyway, but more toward the end of our remodel when we were ready to put down the hardwood. This just couldn't wait, though.
Every bedroom in the house will eventually be completely redone - meaning the walls will be resurfaced, the ceilings will be planked, and new trim will be added. We're nowhere near ready to do all of that to the girls' rooms, but since we're ripping up the carpet, I've decided to do a little temporary mini-makeover. This will consist of repainting the walls, painting a metal headboard for the bed, adding some curtains, painting the floor with a gloss white porch paint, and maybe adding a diamond pattern to the painted floor. Just something to make the room a little more welcoming and comfortable for our girls...
I wish that I had remembered to take a "before" shot of the room before we ripped out the carpet. The carpet looked nice...it was berber in a greyish tone. I've never cared for grey, but it was great carpet because it didn't show dirt.
Here is what the room looked like after we ripped out the carpet and padding and before I pulled up those hundreds of staples. (By the way, just use a large flat head screwdriver to pry carpet staples up from the floor - easy as pie!) Click to enlarge photos...
I'll be painting their room in the same shade of green paint that I have planned for the kitchen. (Homestead Resort Parlor Sage) It's a fresh, sage color and will be lighter than the green that is currently on the bedroom walls. Both Lindsay and Zoe love green...and this is paint that I already have on hand, so green it will be again!

Oh my...lots of work. You'll do great, though, as always. I can commiserate with you about the ripping up staples, part. Our living was covered in awful dirty shag carpet (thick/high pile) and underneath was millions of staples. ARGH! Took us what seems like forever getting them up. *hugs* Can't wait to see the finished product!
When we were kids, our folks let us draw and color on the plywood floor. It was fun to "decorate". Eventually they did carpet over but hidden underneath it all is a little kid's artwork.
Isn't just awful, Bev?! We found remnants of old shag carpet in the bedroom, too...probaby what was originally in the house before the berber was put down. It was a orange...ick!
That's a good idea, Ben! How neat to think about your artwork still being there even now:)
