Cottage Fireplace Makeover Finale! No more bling!
I stayed extremely busy working on projects this weekend. Boy, am I tired! Today, though, I'm excited to say that our fireplace makeover is finally complete! If you remember, I started by replaceing the tile, then I added a little age and texture with the use of glaze, paint, and extra grout. The last step, which I completed this weekend, was to paint the brass insert black...buh bye bling! Here are a few before, during, and after shots...(Click to Enlarge)
So there you go:) This fireplace was a lot of work but I'm very pleased with the result. About the painted insert...I first bought a can of American Tradition high heat paint. The finish was called BBQ black. I *thought* it was going to be a matte finish. I applied the first coat with a small foam roller brush. After a while I discovered that it was a very high gloss finish, which was NOT the look I wanted (read: "I was practically freaking out.") I ran back to Lowes to see if I could find a matte finish, but they didn't carry it. What I ended up buying was Rustoleum High Heat paint (satin finish) in a spray can. This worked SO much better. I regret that I didn't use it for the first coat! The spray produced a nice, smooth coat that dried to the touch within minutes - it looks great! So my advice, if you're going to tackle the bling on your insert,is to use Rustoleum High Heat in a spray can...cover and tape everything that isn't to be sprayed, and open the windows!

Kim, You're amazing! You get right in there and get things done with no fear, I admire that about you. I LOVE the fireplace re-do. Love the color of your walls and your art work too. What's next, the brick black splash in the kitchen?

Thank you, Sheila and Buena! I'm really happy with how it turned out, though I wouldn't want to do this project again any time soon, lol! Buena, I can't wait to do our backsplash! We have to finish the trim on our cabinets, paint them, and then install the new countertop. After that I can finally start on the backsplash...I can't wait!
Kim, it looks really great! The small size tiles make such a big difference in the look of the surround. I like your idea of using glazes for an aged effect...it's subtle, and looks very realistic. Kudos!

WOW! Gorgeous - what a transition, Kim! Painting the insert really made a big diff too, hey? I can't get over what a little paint and elbow grease can do. We still have parts of our insert to finish, but the difference is phenomenal. Lovely piccies!

Kim, i found you today while searching for info on painting a brass insert. I had planned to use exaxtly what you did in the end but was unsure if I should sand the finish or not, what did you do. Incidentally, my insert is the exact mate of yours.

Hi Judy! Funny about our twin inserts!
I didn't sand but you do need to make sure the insert is nice and clean and perhaps use a deglosser or denatured alcohol.
I used *spray* high heat paint. At first I had tried brushing on from a quart and the results where awful...Spray works MUCH better and it turned out great! Have fun and let me know how it turns out!
