A Few of My Favorite Things
Even in the midst of remodeling chaos, there are some things around here that continue to make this place feel like "home". I've always loved the giant canvas that sits atop our mantle. The flowers and colors are so alive and are a great pick-me-up:) A few have said that perhaps the piece is too large for the space but that has never mattered to me. I could lie on the couch and stare at it all day and never get tired of looking at it.
Because we don't really yet have any bookshelves (gasp!), I do a lot of book stacking here and there and I love how some of my favorite books coordinate nicely with the canvas, which brings me to another favorite - old books! Not all of the books here are old, but how I do love finding a great old book! Do you every open them up and just smell them? So I'm always on the hunt for old books that pertain to gardening, housekeeping, music and other titles that interest me.
Atop this particular stack of books is my pair of birds, partridges I think. I picked these up at Goodwill months ago. The first time I saw them, I carried them around in my cart and ended up putting them back as I was already buying loads of stuff that day (sound familiar?). But when I went back to Goodwill, they were still there so I brought them home. Actually, I think when I saw them next, I could only find one of them, but then the *next* time I went, they were together at last. I love these little birds:) One looks like it had been broken and glued back together, but that's ok. I just like how they look like they belong together and love each other and are up there on that big stack of books by all by themselves but huddled together. One is a little bigger than the other, so perhaps they are mother and child. I keep them facing each other as they are extra sweet that way.
As you can imagine, I've been incredibly busy. I do really hate that word and wish that I could remove it from my vocabulary. I ended up having an extra week to fill my candy order so I'm very much relieved by that because between school shopping and the kids actually going back to school this week, it has been crazy around here trying to get back into the school routine, attending all the orientations (one on Tuesday and two tonight!), and other little things that I just didn't have to do during the summer. The week after next should be much easier as all three kidlets will be in school all day long and I won't be picking up my kindergartener in the middle of the day as I am now.
I did make extra boxes of candies with the large order I've had to fill so that I could go ahead and post them to my shop, but I had some requests for those boxes - which means they won't be going in the shop afterall. I want to apologize to all of you who have written and who are waiting for them to be posted online - but I will be making new ones again starting next week and won't fill any other requests locally until I have items online. Thank you for your patience!
Hope everyone is doing well and staying cool! We're having a major heat wave here - got up to 104 yesterday! Whew!

Hey Kim ~ thanks for visiting my blog. Sorry I hadn't been around much lately!
So you are going to open a store on ETSY? Thats great! Look forward to seeing your "shop" when it opens. =)
I know September starts my craziness since I am homeschooling both the boys this year.
I know I too LOVE my old books. Most of the ones I collect are on the subject of the everyday affairs for the 19th century - topics such as cooking, amusements, medicine, ect.
Well TTFN ~ Jessica
Kim, books are one of my favorite things. I love to decorate with old books. I love the picture you have on your mantel and think the books compliment it perfectly!
It's been busy around here, too. I posted our latest "nightmare" project on my blog....Painting!!!! Not my favorite thing to do, especially outside painting.
(whispering) i might be ready for winter (whispering and gasping)
The books look really cute stacked up like that. Great color!!
I know you are sooo busy. Keep cool!!

I didnt know if anyone had told you that my grandmother has taken a turn for the worse lately and has to live in an assisted care facility now (otherwise known as a...sigh...nursing home). Anyway, all of her beautiful things have had to be divied up among family. Though I'm so terribly saddened by her health problems, I'm happy to provide a home for some of she and Papa's beautiful furniture and art. I'm sure you remember some of the beautiful things they had. Maybe when I finally get the items, you can help me to 'stage' them in my front room so they'll be shown off to their best advantage. I'll send pictures as soon as I can.
And I LOVE your color-coordinated books!
Nice to see you posting, Kim. I love your stack of books. The color combo is very inspiring.
Love the way those books look with that picture.
Your canvas and books look great on the mantle!
You really sound busy...I'm tired just reading about all you have to do. LOL
Its been crazy around here, too. As it turn out, selling and buying a new house isn't near as much fun as I thought it would be. :(
Stay cool and I hope your schedule calms down soon.
Kimberly :)
Hi Kim,
Your room is just beautiful and very cozy. I would love to know if you painted the canvas or bought it somewhere?
Thanks, Vicki
Hi Kim! So glad to see you are back and posting!
I LOVE your piece of art on the mantle, it's so bright and cheery. I love how the books compliment it.
Thanks for sharing and so glad to see you back.

Your photos are always a breath of fresh air! Simple but beautiful! Thanks for sharing Kim...and good luck on your etsy adventure. cherry
Thank you everyone! Things will calm down around here soon - today was my baby's first full day of school! Fortunately, no mold an any of my books yet! I'm always so happy to hear from all of you and look forward to catching up on all of your sites! It sounds like all of you are just as busy! Whew!
Vicki, the canvas is a digital print on canvas! I wish I had the talent to paint something like that!
Ashes, I'm sorry to hear about Helene. Such a sad thing old age is:( You are so fortunate to inherit a little piece of your grandparents like that - they were incredible people.
Jessica, you have your hands full! I homeschooled many years ago and it was all I could do to homeschool one child! You'll be a great teacher though!
Marilyn - are you having to paint in this intolerable heat! I'll have to read you entry to see what progress you've made...hopefully it's all behind you now! I'm so ready for fall and winter, too!
