Front Porch "Garden Dresser" Photos
I'm really not sure what the technical name for indoor pieces of furniture used for outdoor gardening purposes, but I shall call mine my "Garden Dresser". Or maybe my "Dresser Garden"? At any rate, I have moved it into place and have begun adorning her with fresh floral goodness. I still need to order knobs from Ebay and I do have my eyes on some vintage glass ones. I thought that until I ordered them, I would make do with some little metal ones we had lying about the house. I even painted them white to match the dresser, but when I tried to attach them, only one would screw in properly. Seems I need longer screws for the others.
Here is a before photo. I found the dresser for a mere $25 at a roadside junk store!
And here she is now with a couple of coats of primer and a couple of coats of white exterior paint (just try to imagine the glass knobs for the top drawers, lol)....Click to enlarge photos.
The plants are new and look a bit sparse right now, but the verbena and vinca will grow tall and thick (I'll have to remove that little watering can in the basket, for sure!), and hopefully the ivy will thicken quickly, too. The flowers/ivy in the drawer are actually planted in a basket. I placed the basket in the drawer and covered it all in dry moss to make it look as if the drawer was the planter. I just remove the moss and the basket when I need to water to avoid water damage to the drawer.
I felt like the dresser needed a "mirror" above it so I took a frame that I had and painted it white. I'm not sure if I like the color as much as I thought I would...it blends in with the white lattice too much, I think. But it does make a pretty frame for the clematis:) I wired the frame to the lattice so the wind doesn't blow it over. I would *love* to figure out a way to have ivy growing just in the center of the frame, but I'm not sure how I would go about watering the ivy as it would be potted and sitting right on the dresser. I would want to move it to water it...hmmm.
You can't see it in this photo really well, but the red folded matelasse quilt on the bottom I found at Goodwill the other day for $9.99! It's in perfect condition, and is 100% cotton. I can't believe I found it in red! The apple basket and the wooden tray are Goodwill finds as well.
I'm currently reading this scrumptious old book called Elizabeth and her German Garden. I found out about it here at Brocante Home and couldn't wait to order it. There are modern editions, but I just longed to have an antique copy. This one was printed in 1901 and I love to imagine all the hands that held it before mine:)
I gave the old wooden handle of my gardening trowel a facelift by painting it red. Now it's functional and beautiful:)
The tall, ivy topiary behind the red chair is another Goodwill find. It is artificial so I won't be leaving it out on the porch, but it gives me an idea on how I may be able to fill in that space in the future. Oh, and the big white bowl is filled with birdseed! Hubs said I'm going to have a porch full of bird poop now but I want to experiment to see if that will be the case. I'll be playing with this arrangement, taking away from and adding to, all summer. It probably won't look the same from one day to the next:)
What next in my crazy gardening adventures? I would love to have a garden tub! Corey from Tongue in Cheek graciously allowed me to borrow this photo of her mothers red tub. Love it! I've been on the lookout for inexpensive or free old tubs for weeks now and almost had one a couple of weeks ago...but scheduling a good pickup arrangement was a nightmare for us that particular weekend so I told the owner to pass it on to the next person that wants it. Another one will come along...and the last thing I need right now is another project, hehe.
Speaking of projects, my fingertips have healed, gloves and grout have been purchased, and I'm ready to finish grouting the last 25% of the brick backsplash. Now if only hubs would remember to move the stove before he leaves for work (*hint hint*) :)
Oh, and speaking of hints, hehe - keep checking in on the Cottage Charm Give Away post for new giveaways between now and May 25th. May 26th is the big day where we announce the winners! Feel free to join up - there is still time!
That's all for now...It's late and my-new-bought-in-February dishwasher decided to stop working properly today so we have a sinkful of dishes to wash, not to mention the dishes that are in the dishwasher. The repairman can't get here until MONDAY. Joy. Perhaps hubs will move the stove and do the dishes?

Hi Kim, love the dresser and what you did with it!...you are way too creative and such an inspiration.
OMG! That is SO CUTE! I just had to call my DH over to look at the photos (to his credit he was very sweet and said "Cute!" at all the right places). So do you have an actual covered porch to protect all of it from weather? I so wish I had a nook like that. Sigh! I do want to hear what happens with the birdies... it's a cute idea, but I wouldn't want to clean up bird poo all the time either! Let us know!
It all looks fantastic! Love the red against the white. The bowl of bird food is a cute idea - can't wait to read whether that works out or not.

Kim - great job, love that dresser and what you've done with it, and what a steal! Yes, the birds, and squirrels if you have them, will be in the bowl! I tried a sweet little dish of seed on my green potting bench on the front porch (see my post in April)and the darned squirrels were there in no time gobbling up all even before the birds arrived - they have an amazing sense of smell I guess!
I love your Garden Dresser! What a great idea! I like the way the chairs frame the dresser too. It makes me think that I want to get out my old Garden Chair, give it a fresh coat of paint and place it on our front step! Maybe I will borrow your idea and paint it red.
Thanks for the inspiration!

I love what you did with the dresser. It looks adorable. One of my favorite things to do, is use indoor furniture, outdoors. I have an old dresser outside too.
I can't believe that you got all of those great things, at the Goodwill. I never seem to find anything great there. I guess I will keep looking.
Thanks,
Rosemary
Kim, what beautiful eye candy this a.m.! Love that little dresser & all you did with it. You've very creative & imaginative with all your thrift finds. It's perfect on your porch!

Oh my gosh Kim,that looks like it should be in a magazine! I love how you accessorized it. I really love the open drawer with the plants in it.
That is absolutely beautiful. What a great idea. I think you need a shop, I really do.
I adore your dresser garden. I wish I was sitting in your front porch, with a cup of tea, a nice book in hand, gentle wind blowing, birds chipping nearby ... some kind of heaven !! You scored girl!!!
BTW, those hardware that came with the dresser looks great as it is. Of course antique glass kind would be perfect.
Your porch tableau is stunning, just stunning! I'm wanting to do something similar on my porch, but with a baker's rack. There's one at the thrift store I'm watching, hoping the price comes down. I never thought of a dresser, though--what a good idea! Thanks for the inspiration!
It's beautiful!!! Gives me some ideas for our own "bare" front porch!
I love how you use red in so many places!!! Still working on mom... Red is a 'lil too bold for her. But I LOVE it! :o)

Kim, I love the dresser. The entire arrangement looks so inviting! Wish I was there to have a glass of iced tea with you!

I think a tiny touch of red would be the thing to set off the "mirror" -- perhaps a racing strip [vintage of course]. :>)
Miranda: Wow your home looks more and more like a paradise to me, dreaming myself living it it.....:)
Oh Kim, it is just FANTASTIC! You did a wonderful job in every way! I love, love, love it! Every detail is just adorable! Gorgeous photos - what a present for us!
xo,
Kim
Wow - so pretty, Kim!
Love it! You are so talented!

I adore your garden dresser and your idea for the "mirror" over it is brilliant and just the right touch.
I love this look! Can I mimic this on a deck or would the rain warp the dresser? Our deck is not screened in or covered. Probably not!
Just love what you have done with your dresser. I really want one now after seeing yours and Daisy Cottage's.
Gorgeous dresser! I just love your blog!!

The dresser is gorgeous. Picture perfect porch.

I love your garden dresser- I think I need one to replace my potting bench; the mirror frame idea is marvelous!
I, too, have been looking for an old tub- I saw one last year at the local nursery, planted with sunflowers & pumpkins, which trailed along the ground- it was just stunning.
I just bought a copy of "Elizabeth & her German Garden" after hearing about it from a blogging friend; I already love the author, having read "The Enchanted April" every year in the spring for some time.
Thank you, everyone! It has been so much fun dressing up this little porch - and the look does change from day to day, hehe! Let me know if you try this dresser idea!
About having it on the deck...I personally probably wouldn't with this dresser but I think it just depends on the piece. If I found a dilapitated old dresser, I just may put it out in the elements like on the deck or in a garden. I've seen it done before and it looks great! Just paint it with two or three coats of exterior paint and it will last a bit longer.
Meg, how neat about the book! I'm not through mine yet - waiting for summer break to arrive. I also want to read A Solitary Summer - sounds good, too!
Kim, This is so pretty! Thank you for the wonderful idea and inspiration! You did a beautiful job with your garden dresser!
Nice project! When you first posted about it and how it needed knobs I thought to myself that glass knobs would do really well. Thought I posted a comment about them, but upon looking back realized I hadn't.
So great minds think alike. Look forward to seeing what knobs you find for it for that finishing touch.
I still have a glass knob we found in the ground back home in Louisiana. I am waiting for the perfect project for it ;)
