My First Word Stone - "Simplicity"
This morning I was very much in the mood to go and pick out a few plants for the dresser that is soon to go on our front porch. Goodness, we have so many empty landscaping beds around here, just brimming with potential, but at the moment, I'm finding them all a bit overwhelming. "Start small", I thought this morning..."a few colorful potted arrangements for the front porch is what I'll focus on today, and I'll go from there". I even had a friend babysit for me so that all my mental energy, hehe, could go into choosing just the right plants. But by the time I got to the point of picking the plants themselves, it was very cold and windy and gloomy out. I had already lost my motivation and stood there most of the time utterly confused as to what to buy! I kept gravitating back toward the herbs(which I wasn't going to buy today but plan to one of these days) and sniffing them all. Ahhh, glorious! Especially the lemon balm! This is going to be a busy weekend, anyway, with out of state friends visiting, so I'm not sure where I'd find the time to plant...so I left emptyhanded. I have some gardening books filled with ideas, so I think I need to study them some more and return a little more prepared (and when the weather feels like spring!).
I made my very first word stone a couple of nights ago! I loved how it turned out and I can't wait to make many more. I think next time I'll position a ruler below the letters, though, to make them a little straighter, but for my first one, I think it came out pretty well! Can you imagine lots of these with different words spread throughout a garden, or painted white and used even in the house propped upright here and there?
Oh, and here's is a photo of the finished dresser for the front porch. It still needs knobs for the top...I checked at Lowes and Home Depot today for something that would work but couldn't really find anything that I liked. Everything just seemed too "new". I think I'll poke around on Ebay for some old ones. We'll move the dresser in place this weekend, but alas, no plants in which to adorn it yet - *sniff*.

I love some of the knobs that Anthropologie has. You could try there... That's a beautiful dresser!
I must warn about lemon balm. It started out contained in a pot, but has since spread itself ALL over our yard. It's especially hard to get rid of between the paving stones. It's really invasive so be cautious!
Kim, I love the word stone! I have got to find one of those kits! I bought a couple of neat signs at Hobby Lobby and am thinking of putting one out on my porch....we'll see.
I love herbs in my yard but the chives, mint and hyssop just took over so I had to actually dig them out and try to get rid of them. I still have a mint patch but it's not near anything that it can invade and the chives I keep cut with the lawn. It smells so funny when Al mows the little patch where they were, like "chives" not fresh grass....LOL.
And the dresser is going to be just AWESOME!!!!
Kim now you must tell us HOW you made the stone words! I just love that & would love to try some...please share! I just bought some annuals today & will be planting my containers tomorrow. We got herbs in the ground last week too, so I can't wait to use them.

LOVE the word stone! And I actually like that the lettering is not lined up perfectly...its completely charming.
I can't wait to see the dresser "planted" and in position.
I second the suggestion of Anthropology...they have wonderful vintage-y knobs.
Kimberly :)
I love your dresser. I got some knobs online. Just type in antique knobs. I can't remember the name of it, but they had good prices.
Have a great weekend!

The dresser looks wonderful!
The stone word is perfect. I'd love to know how to make these!

Hi Kim,
The stone word looks great! I like it the way it is, and I could completely see it shabbied in a white and placed as an accessory in any cottage room. On a table beside some pretty flowers and books. The dresser look great! I have two that I am considering painting, but not for awhile. The master bedroom always seems to get done last. :-)
Kim~
I love that the letters aren't lined up perfectly straight. Also, you can find lots of glass knobs on ebay that would look lovely on your dresser.
Thanks for sharing!

Simplicity, what a perfect word!
Love your dresser and can't wait to see the final effect.
Love the word stone, and what a good word to choose as a start. If only everything in life were simplicity itself, how much easier life would be!
The word stone is cool! I wouldn't bother with a ruler, I think it turned out great and the letters not being perfectly aligned makes it look "real" as it should be.
Again, I think that dresser is perfect. I never would have thought to use it as a tiered table to hold potted plants. It's going to look great!
Miranda: I love your stone as it is. I think if you use a ruler to make the letters straighter, it would lose its handmade feel.
Thank you ladies! Well, maybe my crooked letters aren't that bad afterall! What is perfect in this world now anyway?
Great to know about the lemon balm and other herbs! Wow!
If anyone is interested in making their own wordstones, you can order a kit from the "word stone" link in this entry.:)
I've put herbs in my front landscaped bed, simply because there's no other sunny spot for them. I'm aiming for a mix of herbs, perennials, and then splashes of bright annuals, sort of a mishmash, cottage garden look. This is only year two, but it's underway. And the lemon balm is getting out of control!
I think your word stone looks wonderful, especially with the letters a little wonky--it really suits the feel of it. Maybe I'll make one for my herb bed!
Love the stone, thanks for the link. I also think the dresser came out so nice. I always love your pictures.
