Love Your Critters Day
Most would say that part of what makes a house a home are all those loved ones that live within. I agree. This house just wouldn't be a home without my longtime childhood friend and husband (who still treats me like a princess after all these years and I don't know why), my beautiful three daughters, and my sweetheart dogs, Penelope and Cara Bella. Yes, I'm very emotional and reflective this week but I thought I would use this to my advantage and just go ahead and pen my thoughts.
Last weekend, while perusing Craigslist for inexpensive finds, I ran across an ad in the "free" section. Someone needed to find a home for their five year old dog because they just found out they were pregnant with twins and didn't think they could handle the added responsibility. That in itself didn't upset me so much, but it did bother me that they touted the dog as being great with kids, easy going, that it would be happy lying at your feet. HOWEVER...if they didn't find it a home by the end of the month, they would send it to a kill shelter. ARGH!!!!!!! The real kicker? This poor dog had been rescued from a no-kill shelter by them...it had been there for a couple of years before he was finally adopted. They mentioned in their ad that he had had a rough life. Yah, tell me about it!
I'm really soft hearted when it comes to animals and this just broke my heart. I did email the person asking them to reconsider sending the dog to kill shelter and told them that I would gladly help place the dog. I have very minor experience quickly placing dogs...Back last spring, I found a pregnant (dumped) dog weaving in and out of heavy traffic and picked her up and brought her home. I decided to keep her until after her babies were born and old enough to go to new homes. When the time came, I created a webpage for them and then placed an ad in the Sunday paper. The puppies were placed within a day and the mother had a new home within two days. We got so many phone calls from people interested in the mother, too, which really happily surprised me. Anyway, I offered to the Craigslist person to help create a page for their dog and they kindly told me that they would consider it if no one replied to their ad by the end of the month. Apparently, several people *did* reply because I got an email from them letting me know that they had found the dog a nice home with a big yard - and they thanked everyone for their concern. Makes me wonder if other people were saddened by this ad as much as I was...I'm glad it all worked out, though.
I should mention that the people we placed the mama dog with last year ended up calling us a month later to ask us if we could take the dog back for a while. They loved the dog but were having a difficult financial time and needed to get back on their feet. I told all the families that adopted our dogs that if they changed their minds or if something came up, to please bring the dogs back. I'm glad this family wasn't too proud to do just that. They told us they would call us back within a month or so, but we never heard from them again.
If you're interested reading about the mama dog I rescued last year and/or seeing the webpage I created for her and her babies, I will gladly share the link. In case you're wondering, that sweet mama dog was placed with another family that wouldn't give her up now for anything in the world... She is now our very own precious and irreplaceable Penelope Brown. Thanks, Penelope, for helping to make our house a real "home".

This is a very sweet story! Kudos to you for helping. We have 4 pets...three adopted from the humane society and one from ratbonerescues.com. We shipped the rat terrier from Alabama to our house in Oregon. We love them all - and strongly support adoption of pets!
How wonderful, Laurie! Was your rat terrier a hurricane survivor? Thanks for sharing!
Hi, I am an old house restoration person as well as a volunteer for beagle rescue. With your kind heart and love of animals, have you ever thought about joining a dog rescue group? I am part of BREW-Midwest, which is a non-profit group that works to re-home beags in the Midwest area. We are always looking for volunteers and foster mom's, maybe you could give our website a check. I do not have my own blog, but love reading the restoration blogs for new ideas for my own 1890's house. My husband and I are on year seven of our restoration. (Ugh!) Keep up the great work on your house! --Jenny. (jlgale1@insightbb.com)
I'm thinking of adopting soon too. I want to make a little more progress before I do though.
Those CL ads really irritate me too. I saw one around Xmass where they said if no one adopted it by Dec 31, they would take it to the shelter. Happy Holidays!
I'd like a dog, but realistically I think a cat would be more workable.
Hi Jennifer...thanks for dropping me a note! I have thought about helping a shelter in some way when things settle down a bit here. I had such a great experience using the webpage for the puppies that I've thought about even offering this as a free service to others - taking more appealing and personable photos of the animals and sharing their personal story...people seem to really fall get attached that way. Can you share that web address with me? Thanks!
HIN, yeah, don't those ads just bug you?! Ugh!!!! My husband and kids really want a cat but I'm really allergic to them. I know you'll find a wonderful new addition to your family when the time is right!
I rally enjoyed reading about Penelope and her babies awhile back. How wonderful that things worked out for you to be her humans.
I cannot stand it when people get pets but don't count the cost and so dump them off or send them to a shelter. I could throttle them! I'm glad things worked out well for the dog you read about.
I don't know where I'd be without my furballs (4 cats, 1 dog, 3 rabbits, 1 hamster). They always seem to understand me when no one else does and give that much needed kiss or 'headbutt'.
Hi again,
For some reason I thought that you were located in Chicago. Yikes! I'm loosing my mind! BREW Mid-West only goes as far south as Indiana, but it might give you some ideas. The website is: brewbeagles.org
I loved what you did with pictures and website for the puppies and their mom! --Jenny
Hey Sharon! I never knew you had such a passel o' critters! You'll have to post some pics sometime! I know what you mean about the "headbutts", lol. And pets don't talk back to you and argue with you, either (well, most of the time, hehe)
Jennifer, I really enjoyed looking through that site. I especially liked the page "Giving up your Beagle". It has a lot of things for people with any kind of animal to think about before turning them into a rescue or shelter. http://www.brewbeagles.org/giving-up.php Thanks for the link!
Somehow I think I missed your posting about the doggies. I read all of it just now, and I must say I got extremely misty. Thank you for sharing that with us all, Kim.
I will never understand how someone could be so heartless as to abandon an animal - especially one that is pregnant. How irresponsible and cruel! :(
Fortunately for Penelope, you happened upon here. I was so proud of you!
I'm a real animal lover too and so your experience really touched my heart. I'm so glad you took in Penelope and found loving homes for all her adorable babies! I love happy endings. :) *HUGS*
((hugs for kim)) I only had a minute to pop in and thought I'd say hi. :) Hope you find strength soon to tackle your kitchen project! love, Amanda
Hi Kim, your such a sweetie for saving that dog. We lost our wonderful dog "Carl" earlier in the spring he was 15 years old and just our best friend. A week after we lost Carl our house which we had on market sold and we moved within 3 weeks to a condo. I really think it was a God thing, his timing is perfect. We are looking forward to moving into our new house this spring and the first thing we will do is rescue a dog. Blessing to you and by the way how is the kitchen cabinet project going?
Kelli
Aww, Bev, I'm glad you enjoyed the entry and the happy ending. Like you, I'm very sensitive when it comes to animals and their well being. Even on televesion (ficticious or not!), my heart can't take stories or reports of animals being harmed (I must change the channel immediately or leave the room lest I become a puddle on the floor!). I will be anxiously awaiting the time when you find a new sibling for your Libby!
Thank you, Amanda! It's good to see you! I hope tomorrow (Sunday) is much better for you than last and that you had an ok week. Many hugs to you, dear!
Hi Kelli! I'm so sorry to hear about your long time friend Carl:( You never really get over the loss of a pet, but it does get easier as time goes on. I'm excited that you will soon be opening your heart to another dear four legged friend. His (or her!) life will be changed forever as yours will be, I'm sure. I talk to my kids often about what a loving Creator we have in providing us with these precious animals for us to care for - He knows how much joy they bring to us:)
Ugh...the cabinets...I haven't yet started on them. (I am BIG TIME procrastinating here, lol!) I know, though, that once I get started, I won't want to stop until they're done...and I can't wait until they are! I have one door painted just to see what the color looks like and that one door looks funny being the only thing painted, hehe!
Hi Kim,
No we did not rescue Dagger, our Rat Terrier, from the hurricane. He is now three years old and was rescued from a puppy-mill crazy-lady type who kept lots of dogs in little cages. She was arrested and take to jail and the animals distributed to shelters and rescues. I've never bonded with any pet as much as Dagger - everyone else thinks he's a hyper and insane little freak - but we know him as adorable, needy, and loving. He is always two steps behind me wherever I go (except to work). :)
Aww, he sounds like such a sweety:) Don't you love it when they follow you around like that? You really are their whole world:) We had a crazy-puppy-mill-lady story here locally a year or so ago, too. Ugh, people will do anything for a buck. Like your story, fortunately, she was arrested and her animals adopted out.:)
